NAPA COUNTY, CA — JC Greenberg has been appointed as the new Deputy Fire Chief for Napa County following the retirement of former Deputy Fire Chief Jason Martin, it was announced on Friday.
Greenberg, who has been a familiar presence in Napa County’s fire response teams for over two decades, began his career in 2000 as a certified entry-level firefighter with the Cal Fire Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit. Since then, he has steadily advanced through the ranks, demonstrating a deep commitment to fire service in the region.
Currently, Greenberg is involved in several leadership roles within the local fire community. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Napa Communities Firewise Foundation and on the board for the Napa County Fire Service Advisory Committee. Additionally, Greenberg is an active member of the Napa County Interagency Rescue Team and holds the position of operations section chief for Cal Fire Incident Management Team 5.
Matt Ryan, Chief of the Cal Fire Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit and Napa County Fire Chief, praised Greenberg’s extensive experience, noting that he is well-prepared to take on the responsibilities of Deputy Fire Chief. “With his wealth of experience and commitment to excellence, Deputy Chief Greenberg is well-prepared to lead Napa County’s Fire Department and will continue to advance CAL FIRE and the Napa County Fire Department,” Ryan said in a statement.
A Napa native, Greenberg remains deeply rooted in the community, where he lives with his wife and two sons. His appointment to the Deputy Fire Chief role also brings him an annual salary of $219,633, as of 2023, before benefits.
The Napa County Fire Department operates 25 stations, staffed by both volunteer and career firefighters. Cal Fire, contracted by Napa County, provides vital fire protection services through a partnership that includes overseeing both paid and volunteer fire companies. The department’s services extend to the cities of St. Helena and Calistoga, as well as the Schell-Vista and South Lake County Fire Protection Districts. Additionally, the Town of Yountville and the California Veterans Home have contracted fire protection services with Napa County.
Greenberg’s appointment marks a significant transition in the leadership of Napa County’s fire services, and his decades of experience and dedication are expected to serve the community well as he steps into this pivotal role.
