NAPA, CA — In a joint effort with local law enforcement and fire agencies, Sonoma and Napa counties will conduct a targeted emergency alert and warning test next week. The test is scheduled for Thursday, March 27, 2025, and will specifically target residents in evacuation zone SON-6F4, located near the Sonoma-Napa county line.

The test will begin at 10:45 a.m., with both counties sending out Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) messages to individuals within the designated evacuation zone. Approximately 400 residents are expected to receive the alert. Some residents may receive the alert twice, depending on the area they are in. To help residents confirm their location, the counties have provided resources like the Know Your Zone tool and a phone assistance line at 211.

The Wireless Emergency Alert system, a federal initiative, sends out text messages with an accompanying notification sound, similar to an Amber Alert, directly to cell phones in a specified geographical area. No sign-up is required for the alert. However, residents are urged to ensure their phone volume is turned up in order to hear the notification. It is also recommended that cell phones are not on airplane mode or “Do Not Disturb,” as these settings may block the alert.

The exercise will allow emergency services to evaluate the effectiveness of their alerting capabilities and ensure the community is prepared in case of real emergencies. However, officials noted that if extreme weather conditions are forecast for that day, the alert test may be canceled.

For those living in or visiting the affected area, this test offers an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the WEA system and understand how alerts are issued during emergencies.

Residents seeking more information about the exercise or assistance with determining their evacuation zone are encouraged to contact 211 or visit the official county websites.
