PLEASANT HILL, CA — About a dozen people were injured Friday evening at Diablo Valley College when a tree fell near the site of the college’s commencement ceremony, school officials reported.

The incident occurred shortly before 7 p.m. near the football field, where bystanders were gathered to watch the graduation event. The fallen tree struck several individuals, causing injuries to approximately twelve people.

Two of those injured were transported to local hospitals for further treatment, while others were treated and released at the scene. Additionally, one person sought medical care independently following the accident, according to a statement issued by the college on social media.

“Our thoughts are with all individuals and families affected by this incident, and we wish those injured a speedy recovery,” the statement read. “The safety of our students, employees and visitors to our campus is our top priority. We deeply regret that this incident occurred during this milestone occasion.”

Campus crews began removing the tree immediately after the incident and are investigating the cause of the tree’s fall.
