BALDWIN PARK, Calif. — A Southern California police officer was fatally shot and another seriously injured Saturday night after responding to reports of a man firing a rifle in a residential neighborhood, authorities said.
The shooting occurred around 7:12 p.m. Pacific time in Baldwin Park, a city in Los Angeles County, when two officers arrived at the scene of the reported gunfire, according to a statement released Sunday by the Baldwin Park Police Department.
As the officers approached, the suspect allegedly opened fire without warning, striking both officers, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert G. Luna said during a midnight press conference. Sheriff Luna described the incident as a “double homicide,” noting that the second victim, whose identity has not been released, was an adult male.
The mortally wounded officer was identified as Officer Samuel Riveros. He was transported to Los Angeles General Medical Center in Lincoln Heights, where he was pronounced dead, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department confirmed.
Mayor Alejandra Avila of Baldwin Park expressed condolences on behalf of the city council and staff, praising the officers’ bravery and calling on the community to support one another in the wake of the tragedy.
“When danger erupted last night and the call went out for help, it was our Baldwin Park Police Officers who responded without hesitation, reflecting the best of bravery and conviction to serve,” Mayor Avila said in a statement released Sunday. “Last night was a night of tragedy for our community. Many in our community have been affected by these crimes, and I ask that you embrace your officers and neighbors, support them in their time of need and show one another the best of Baldwin Park.”
Authorities are continuing to investigate the shooting and the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s actions.
