A pedestrian was fatally struck by an on-duty Benicia police officer early Wednesday morning.
The officer was driving his patrol car around 2 a.m. in the 1900 block of East 2nd Street when he struck the pedestrian.
Benicia police said paramedics were immediately called and lifesaving efforts were done to try and save the pedestrian’s life but unfortunately he died at the scene.
“This is a tragic incident for all involved,” Interim Benicia Police Chief Mike Greene said. “Our deepest condolences go out to the victim’s family and loved ones.”
The identity of the pedestrian was unknown early Wednesday. He appears to be a White man, between 30 to 40 years old, according to Benicia Police Department Spokeswoman Irma Widjojo.
The Solano County Coroner’s Office will attempt to identify the man and notify his next of kin, Widjojo said.
The involved officer was not responding to a call for service when the collision happened, and was not injured.
The officer, whose name was not disclosed, was immediately removed from the scene as the Benicia Police Department turned the investigation over to the California Highway Patrol and the Solano County District Attorney’s Office.
