SANTA ROSA, CA — A house fire Sunday afternoon in Santa Rosa resulted in the tragic death of a dog and caused an estimated $150,000 in damage to the property.

The fire broke out shortly before 2:30 p.m. at a duplex located in the 600 block of Cordelia Drive, near Howarth Park. According to the Santa Rosa Fire Department, callers reported that the kitchen of the home was on fire.

Firefighters responded quickly, with the first unit arriving on the scene in less than four minutes. Upon arrival, crews found the single-story duplex engulfed in flames. An aggressive interior attack was launched immediately, and the ladder truck crew cut holes in the roof to aid in fire suppression efforts.

While conducting a search inside the unit, firefighters discovered an unresponsive small adult dog. Despite efforts to revive the animal, it was ultimately determined that the dog could not be saved.

However, thanks to the quick thinking of the residents, six other dogs, including several puppies, were safely removed from the home before the firefighters arrived. Battalion Chief Jason Jenkins praised the residents for their actions, stating that their prompt response likely prevented further loss of life.

The fire caused significant damage to the structure, with an estimated $150,000 in destruction. Firefighters were able to contain the blaze before it spread to neighboring homes.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, and no injuries to the residents or firefighters were reported. The Santa Rosa Fire Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
