San Mateo, CA — A tragic accident occurred Tuesday morning on the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge when a speeding vehicle plowed into the toll plaza parking lot, striking several parked cars and killing the driver, authorities reported.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the incident took place at approximately 7:12 a.m. The vehicle involved was identified as a Toyota RAV4 traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed. The SUV crashed into several unoccupied vehicles belonging to the state Department of Transportation that were parked in the toll plaza lot.
Emergency responders arrived quickly on the scene and confirmed the driver of the RAV4 was deceased. The driver’s identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
The crash caused the closure of the eastbound lanes of Highway 92 for several hours while investigators processed the scene. The lanes reopened by 10:20 a.m., according to CHP officials.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the cause of the crash. No other injuries were reported.
